A tenant is required to obtain written approval from the lessor before keeping a pet at the rental property. Keeping an animal, excluding a working dog, at the premises without the lessor's approval constitutes a significant breach.
It's important to note that, apart from the lessor's consent, a tenant's ability to keep a pet on the rental property may be subject to limitations imposed by house rules, park rules, or other relevant laws outlined in the tenancy agreement. For instance:
- Local council regulations may impose restrictions on the number or types of animals allowed on the premises.
- In the case of living in a unit or townhouse, the body corporate by-laws may necessitate obtaining approval from the body corporate before keeping a pet at the premises.
